How did it start
Treating traumatized war victims
Sophrology was created in the 1960s by Alfonso Caycedo, a neuropsychiatrist who studied human consciousness. After Spain’s civil war, Prof. Caycedo improved a way to effectively bring traumatized war victims back to a healthy physical and mental state with a minimal use of drug and psychiatric treatments.
In 1960, he opened the Department of Sophrology and Psychosomatic Medicine at Madrid’s Santa Isabel Hospital.
He realized that Sophrology is a stress reduction method that could be easily applied and had long term results in the fast-paced world of the future.
Geneva Declaration was delivered by Professor Alfonso CAYCEDO on May 17, 2001, at the Human Rights Auditorium of the University of Geneva.
Europe's Hidden Gem
For over 50 years
Sophrology is a, tried, and tested method for well-being for over 50 years with documented results.
Sophrology was first implemented mainly in francophone countries such as France, Switzerland, and Belgium alongside more traditional medical approaches.
In France, Sophrology has been applied by leading medical, biological research center such as Institut Curie, to support cancer patients during treatment. It is also used in corporate and education environments to support with stress-management, confidence and focus.
Today, sophrology is covered by France and Swiss Health insurance companies.
